Speaking of editing, are you a good writer? (Pretty good?) Could you, or could you and your team, put together a decent fundraising letter? If so, you may only need to hire me as an editor...
My editing fee is $150/hr. (Or, $2.50/min.)
Let's say you feel you have a pretty good letter on your hands already. Nevertheless, you'd like me to have a look at it, if only for your peace of mind before you invest thousands of dollars in the mailing...
I may cross out a few lines, turn a phrase here or there, and generally agree that, yes, your letter is solid, ready to go. An editing task of this nature may take me 20 minutes. The cost to you would be $50.
Not bad: If my suggestions lead to your generating just one additional $50 gift, my fee is paid for.
On the other hand, your letter may need major work - it may not be very good at all! - and it may take a good part of my afternoon to fix it. Say, an hour and a half. The cost to you would be $225.
When you send me your letter, I'll be able to tell you if it will take me twenty minutes to improve it, or three hours - and you can make your decision from there. In other words, it depends on your needs (and yes, I'll always give you an estimate beforehand.)
How about just one? But a really good one...
